Well this is a fun and unexpected turn of events, isn’t it? I remember when I used to have a blog dedicated to discussing art in video games years ago, but I was too preoccupied with school at the time and it ended up sad and abandoned. Here I am again though, older, not so much wiser, and deciding it would be fun to give it another shot, so… here we go! All that being said, I suppose I should actually introduce myself in this introduction post — I’m Mags. I’m a huge, lifelong fan of art, video games, and movies, to the point where I decided to get my Bachelor’s in historical costume in Dalhousie University’s Costume Studies degree program. I’ve done the school thing a few times over the years, but Costume Studies was a big old compilation of everything I love all in one lovely package — sewing, history, film and tv, art and design — really great stuff, and I loved every minute of it. Sadly my fourth and final year was cut short when the whole world got put on hold a few years back, but in that time I decided to start my own business making handmade plushies. I also was able to get back into some creative writing, which I had’t really done much of since I was a kid except for therapeutic purposes from time to time. I baked a lot, learned to crochet, and of course, played a lot of games!
Anyway, I’ve been thinking lately about my honours essay and presentation that I had to write in fourth year of my degree. I chose to write about and analyze the historical accuracy of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise, and chose a few different entries in the series to sort of track the degree of accuracy that Ubisoft included in the games over time. I had an absolute blast with all the research and it was a big hit on presentation night, and I just really enjoyed discussing video games through the lens of costume history. So that being said, I suppose that’s what I’d like to do with this blog — I’d like to explore the art and design of video games (and maybe some movies too), and maybe even do some more heavily researched deep dives like my Assassin’s Creed Honours paper. I hope you’ll all come along for the ride with me, it’s going to be a fun one I think! 🙂
